What Is A Template?
A template is a pre-made web page or set of pages very similar to a powerpoint template or pre-made office document, in which you can place your text and image content. A template must have it's links and names in it's menu system set and activated as a blank template does not know the names, number of pages or location of your pages. Think of a template as a picture frame you would buy from the store - you need to supply the picture to place into it (your content) and then a nail and wall to hang it (your webserver).
A website consists normally of a homepage, which is then linked to your various subpages which are basically duplicates of one page with different content and given a unique name - normally it is something like this:
Home - homepage About Us - subpage 1 Contact Us - subPage 2 Products - subpage 3
Our menu system would therefore need 4 unique buttons or labels - home, about us, contact us, products, and within the html we would need to link to these pages by placing a href# link to the appropriate page - to make our various subpages we would have one page duplicated several times and given a different html name such as about_us.html, contact_us.html etc etc - this would be the name placed into the link on the menu system for each page - like this:
Home button links to home.html About Us button links to about_us.html etc., etc.
All images for a webpage should be kept within one folder named "images" as all references for images within the html pages call the image from this named folder - if you have 2 seperate images folders (one for the main homepage template and one for a subpage template) then you can combine the images into the same "images" folder but ensure that the 2 (or more) html pages are next to the images folder, like this:
C:/your_web_folder/ template.html (html file) subpage.html (html file) images (folder)
Various techniques and help are available from our tutorial section as well as from various web building websites around the internet - we recommend Dreamweaver MX or Macromedia HomeSite 5 to build your site, both of which contain excellent help and extensive tutorial documents contained within the program itself.
